Here’s an update on key projects around South Tempe at McClintock and Warner.
Cane’s Fried Chicken 🍗 | SWC of McClintock and Warner
- The City of Tempe approved the plans to open up this restaurant back in December.
- Because there was no change-of-use permit involved (?) the process to did not require that they contact the community. This is when you see the red and white sign go up, and surrounding neighbors get a postcard explaining the project, then inviting everyone to speak their mind at a Public Hearing.
- Honestly, this is discouraging because we do not have a forum to express our distaste for the fast-food joint.
Valvoline Oil Change Shop 🚙 | SEC of McClintock and Warner
Background
- This is in the same space of the former Shell Station.
- Over 700 people signed our petition expressing that this is not the right business for our community.
- Many, many of your sent emails to council.communicator@tempe.gov to share their opinion!
New:
- I was invited to speak to City Council to share that South Tempe communities aren’t excited about an oil change shop.
- The applicant (Valvoline franchisee) has filed a formal proposal to develop the land.
- This requires that the City of Tempe reach out to the adjacent communities to invite them to a Public Hearing. There are two reasons that the City of Tempe is obligated to do this: the demand for more parking, and because this is a gas / oil project.
- If you live near McClintock and Warner, you will probably be getting a notice in the mail ✉️ in June or July.
City of Tempe – Mayor Mark Mitchell met me at Starbucks, and we walked over to McClintock and Warner to talk about the plans and whether the proposed Cane’s or Valvoline is the right fit for the community. We’ve had many City Councilors who have expressed support for our cause on both of these projects.
👉 Bottom line – I am optimistic on the Valvoline project. We should continue to share with elected officials and city planners that we don’t need an oil change shop.
